The feel of Boston and surrounding suburbs can often have an extremely busy and hectic vibe to it. While some people thrive on the energetic vibes of the big city, others like a more laid back and small town feel. If that is you, let me introduce you to Coolidge Corner. This little, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood has a number of very cool and unique shops and places to see that you won t see anywhere else. However, don t get that confused for being boring, as there is still plenty to do in Coolidge Corner! Atmosphere As soon as you step foot into this neighborhood, you will be surprised that somewhere so close to the heart of Boston can maintain such a laid back feel. It was developed as a transit-oriented streetcar suburb and has maintained this small-town feel despite being close to the craziness that Boston can often experience. The streets in this neighborhood are lined with popular coffee shops, small independent boutiques, pharmacies, bookstores, and more. While the majority of the neighborhood maintains this traditional layout, some big banks and chain retail stores have set up shop in this neighborhood as well, which there has been a bit of a backlash against. If you decide to rent here, you will never have a shortage of cool and unique places to eat and shop at. The community is also very close-knit, in which everybody helps everyone else succeed. As for the demographics of this neighborhood, on top of being a spot for young professionals, there is a large Jewish population. As a result, there is a Jewish synagogue on both Beacon Street and Harvard Street. The north of Harvard Street in particular, is characterized by a cluster of Jewish shops such as a bookstore, a kosher deli, a gift shop, and numerous others. History This neighborhood is centered on the intersection of Beacon Street and Harvard Street and was given its name back in 1857. The neighborhood was named after the general store that was opened by the Coolidge brothers in the area. Now, the S.S Pierce building is situated there, which was once the only commercial business in northern Brookline. Over time, however, a lot of different businesses and stores have opened in the area. While this place is a great blend of city life and residential life, you definitely pay a premium for that. Both the real estate and the goods/services in the area are pricey and this is one of the most affluent places in all of Boston. Although, if you enjoy the best of both worlds that Coolidge Corner can offer, it is a fantastic place to live. Getting Around As mentioned previously, Coolidge Corner is a pedestrian s paradise. You ll notice tons of people walking around and checking out all of the cool little shops and storefronts around the area. However, if walking around isn t really your style, there are definitely some other options as well. Things like biking and driving are always an option, but why not try the popular public transit in the area? There's a fantastic light rail and subway that services the whole neighborhood as well as a bus (the #66 MBTA), and the route in Coolidge Corner is considered one of the 15 key routes of the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority). Universities Nearby Boston University Harvard University Massachusetts Institute of Technology Northeastern University Tufts University Check it Out A must-see in Coolidge Corner is the Coolidge Corner Theatre, which is a restored movie palace that has been showing films since 1933. It is one of the last remaining big screen movie houses in the entire country. The S.S Pierce building (which was built in 1897) is a historically significant Tudor-style building that has housed numerous businesses over the years and is characterized by its large clock tower, which is visible from almost each and every place in the neighborhood. The Brookline Booksmith is a large independent bookstore that sells a wide variety of books and also offers author readings each and every week. This neighborhood also hosts a popular farmers market on Thursday s each and every week between June through October and is a great place to find a wide variety of cool items.
